Twitter has purchased the technology behind Ubalo, a 2-year-old startup that specializes in making technical computing more accessible for engineers and scientists.

“In early 2011, we started Ubalo to make large-scale computing easier and more accessible to a technical audience,” co-founders Jacob Mattingley and Ian Downes said in a note published on the company’s Web site Thursday. “A few days ago, Twitter agreed to acquire our technology and we agreed to join their staff.”

A Twitter spokesperson declined to provide comment or share the terms of the deal, but a tweet from Twitter’s engineering team confirms that Ubalo’s staff is joining the flock.

According to case studies published on Ubalo’s website, the startup helped its clients perform their complex data-gathering and analysis tasks faster. Two Twitter-specific examples include rapid natural language processing for Twitter search results, and performing sentimental analysis on 25,000 tweets in parallel in 19.6 seconds.
