Typhoon kills at least 38 in Philippines

At least 38 people have been killed across the Philippines as Typhoon Rammasun continues to batter the country.

Officials said Thursday that at least 38 people were killed as the massive storm continues across the main island of the Philippines, striking a number of population centers across southern and central Luzon. They also said at least eight people have gone missing.

Alexander Pama, the executive director of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council, said over one million people have been affected by the typhoon, out of which 500,000 have fled to emergency shelters in about a dozen provinces and the capital city of Manila.

According to reports, hundreds of thousands were left without power in at least 11 provinces; although, in some, electricity was cut off for precautionary measures.

Typhoon Rammasun first hit the city of Legazpi in Bicol region on July 15. The typhoon was packing sustained winds of 130 kilometers (80 miles). The powerful typhoon is now moving toward China, where it is expected to land on Friday somewhere between the island of Hainan and the southern province of Guangdong.

The Philippines is hit by an average of eight or nine storms a year. The country is still recovering from super Typhoon Haiyan, which killed more than 6,100 people last November. The category-five Haiyan was one of the biggest cyclones to have ever landed anywhere.

Meanwhile, as Typhoon Rammasun moves past the Philippines, conditions over the South China Sea favor intensification. The storm is likely to be a category 3 – or potentially upgraded to a category 4 – as it gains strength over the sea as it nears southern China.
