UK a spark away from new riots

Polly Courtney, a novelist who has interviewed a number of young people involved in the 2011 summer riots across Britain for his new work named Feral Youth, said the young people consider it “only a matter of time” before new unrest as one in five of them are unemployed and the government seems not interested in improving their conditions.

“Charities are doing an incredible job right now but, unless there is a significant shift in Government priorities and spending, more riots can only be a matter of time,” she warned.

“Since August 2011, the situation for many young people has got worse, not better. Unemployment among 16 to 24-year-olds is still at close to one million. That is 20 percent of our young people out of work. More than half of councils have been forced to cut their spending on children’s services,” she added.

Back in 2011 police shot dead a black man named Mark Duggan in north London, sparking a wave of unrest, including looting, arson and clashes with the police that spread to the whole Britain within a few days.

Courtney said the youth in the riot areas told her that they have nothing to lose.

“They had nothing to lose by getting involved because they couldn’t see a path for themselves in the future,” she said.

This comes as Britain’s largest provider of young people’s advise and counseling service in Britain Youth Access confirmed what Courtney had to say.

“Given the right spark, the conditions exist for further eruptions of violence,” Barbara Rayment of Youth Access said.

She said the young people are right to think the government has forgotten about their problem considering the benefit cuts, poor access to housing and job opportunities, ongoing difficulties in police relations and lack of investment in youth services.
