UK after partners for military campaigns

Phillip Hammond said during a visit to Berlin earlier this week that Germany should use its untapped military potential to “deliver firepower” to the West.

Hammond, who is overseeing massive defense cuts in Britain said Germany should leave its “historic reluctance” to engage in conflicts behind and adopt a military position proportionate to its economy.

“Because of the historic reluctance to engage and operate overseas, it is self-evident that there is still huge potential in the German defense structure to deliver more useful firepower to the alliance,” Hammond said.

After the Second World War and the Nazi devastation, Germany has kept a low profile on military affairs and has put in a lot of effort to deflect attentions from its military role in Afghanistan.

Berlin also refused to help Britain and France in the Libyan offensive despite its membership in NATO as Europe’s biggest economy.

However, the crisis-hit Britain seems set to drag Berlin deeper into action in military adventures in line with its own interests.

It was disclosed back in February that Britain is running four operation centers in the troubled Syrian city of Homs and delivering arms, tactical support and training to Syrian armed groups, which seek the ouster of the Syrian government.

That, coupled with Foreign Secretary William Hague’s veiled threat on Monday that there is an end to the supposed international community’s patience with the Syrian situation, shows London has not learned a lesson from Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya and is plotting another military campaign.

However, with an economy deep into recession and the Ministry of Defense’s massive cost-cutting measures to axe 29,000 civilian defense staff and 25,000 forces by 2015, the bankrupt Britain is far from being capable of continuing its war-mongering policies, in both economic and military terms.

In that context, Hammond’s call on Berlin to take up a more active role in international military operations seems a hypocritical cover for Britain’s hope to be able to use Germany as a means to its own ends.
