‘UK anti-social behaviour on rise’

According to the British government’s 2011-12 crime survey, which was published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), 81 percent of the public think anti-social behaviour had gone up nationally, with 37 percent saying it had increased in their local area.

The poll of 46,000 people aged over 16 also found that nearly one in three (30 percent) of respondents had been a victim of, or had witnessed some form of, yob behaviour in the last year.

Moreover, the figures suggested that alcohol-related incidents were the most common problem experienced or witnessed by those surveyed.

Max Chambers, of the Policy Exchange think tank, said it was clear anti-social behaviour was a “serious and widespread problem”.

“The fact that such a significant majority of the public think anti-social behaviour is getting worse nationally may be of concern to ministers, especially at a time when overall crime is actually falling at record rates,” Chambers added.
