UK backs US chemical weapons claims

British Prime Minister David Cameron supported Whitehouse claims over the use of chemical weapons by Syrian government and said the two countries’ spying agencies have been sharing information.

Cameron, who will speak to the US President Barack Obama today ahead of the G8 summit in Northern Ireland, said he welcomes the assessment by the Americans and that Britain shares the US’s views on the issue.

The British Foreign Secretary William Hague also stated that the British government agrees with the US assessment and said the crisis demands a “strong, determined and coordinated response from the international community”.

On June 13, US Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes claimed in a White House statement that the Syrian government “has used chemical weapons, including the nerve agent, sarin, on a small scale” against the foreign-backed Takfiri militants “multiple times in the last year.”

The statement implied the Syrian government has crossed Washington’s “red line”, which according to President Barack Obama’s last year remarks would prompt the US to become more involved in the conflict in the Arab country by providing the insurgents with military support.

Syria, however, strongly rejects such claims and said the militants have used chemical weapons on several occasions, including an attack in the region of Khan al-Assal in the northwestern province of Aleppo on March 19, where over two dozen people died.

Senior Russian politician Alexei Pushkov also dismissed the claims and said they have been made up to help the US justify intervening in the conflict.

Earlier probes by UN investigators have pointed to evidence of insurgents having used chemical weapons in the war-torn country.
