‘UK Berlin embassy holds listening post’

Classified documents leaked by American whistleblower Edward Snowden, aerial photographs, and information about past spying activities in Germany suggest that Britain’s eavesdropping agency, the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) is operating a covert listening station in Berlin.

According to reports, the spy base has been used to intercept Germany’s parliament and Angela Merkel’s offices in the Chancellery, using hi-tech equipment placed on the roof of the embassy building.

Aerial photographs of Britain’s embassy in Berlin show a potential spy base enclosed inside a white, cylindrical tent-like structure which cannot be easily seen from the streets, The Guardian reports.

The structure has been in place since the British embassy opened in 2000, following German reunification.

“If GCHQ runs a listening post on the top of the UK’s Berlin embassy, it is clearly targeting politicians and journalists. Do these people pose a threat? ,” said Jan Albrecht, a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and a data protection campaigner.

Earlier in October, US whistleblower J. Kirk Wiebe, dragged Britain into the spying scandal, saying the US used its British spy base to intercept Merkel’s phone calls.

Wiebe, who worked for US National Security Agency’s (NSA) for three decades, said US spies had been listening to Merkel and 35 other world leaders’ calls from RAF Menwith Hill in North Yorkshire, which is the biggest surveillance facility in Europe.
