A British teacher who has been taken hostage by militants in Libya several months ago has been freed, the British Foreign Office says.
“We are glad that David Bolam is safe and well after his ordeal, and that he has been reunited with his family,” a Foreign Office spokeswoman said on Sunday, adding, “We have been supporting his family since he was taken.”
Bolam had been working at the International School in the Libyan city of Benghazi, which is now closed, and his abduction had not been reported at the request of the Foreign Office and his family.
The Foreign Office did not release further details on Bolam’s case. However, British media said that he had been taken hostage in May. In August, Bolam appeared in a video posted online in which he appealed to British Prime Minister David Cameron to secure his release.
Reports also said that local political factions secured Bolam’s release and a ransom was paid after demands had been made to the school.
It is not clear how much money was paid and who paid it.
Bolam’s release came after the beheading of a British hostage, aid worker Alan Henning by the Takfiri ISIL militants who are operating in Iraq and Syria. Bolam flew back to the UK on Thursday night.
Libya plunged into chaos following the 2011 uprising that toppled the longtime ruler, Muammar Gaddafi. The ouster of Gaddafi gave rise to a patchwork of heavily-armed militants and deep political divisions.
The North African country has recently been witnessing numerous clashes between government forces and rival militia groups that refuse to lay down arms. The groups are now turning their guns on each other in an attempt to dominate politics and the country’s vast oil resources.
