UK lacks prowess to be seen as powerful

British Prime Minister David Cameron is increasingly giving an impression through his recent positions that he is trying to portray UK as a new global power. This has been specifically evident in his recent clash with EU over an extra budget contribution as well as his war of words with Russian President Vladimir Putin over Ukraine. But experts believe the country lacks what it takes to materialize Cameron’s wishes. They say UK will be particularly weightless without the support of the US.

Dmitry Linnik, the bureau chief of the Voice of Russia radio station in London, has told Press TV that British prime ministers have always played the role of a US mouthpiece, adding that not many inside the international community take UK’s ambitions for a global power seriously.

“It’s long been said … that the UK is punching above its weight in international affairs. That extra weight comes solely from its close association with the United States,” Linnik said. But the UK, he added, is “sort of the American lapdog”.

“In fact, what lends the UK this additional strength of voice, but on its own of course the UK does carry that much weight.”

Linnik said UK’s rivals including Germany and France do not accept UK’s ambitions for a regional leader.

“I don’ think that Germany will ever agree to a role that would be any sense subordinate it to the United Kingdom,” he told Press TV’s UK Desk in an exclusive interview.

“So, I think Berlin will always consider itself to be the leader of the EU, and in fact it is. And I think most nations will recognize that, including the United Kingdom.”

Linnik further said the recent referendum on independence of Scotland exposed UK’s vulnerability, what he says the British public is acutely aware about.

“I don’t think there is much of an ambition at the level of the [British] population to talk about the UK as a global power. Yes, it [the UK] is a sort of significant player; nobody is disputing that. But talking about it a global power is not something that the UK people talk about seriously.”
