UK needs nukes contingency plans: MPs

Britain has so far failed to offer response on what it would do with its nukes, now based in Clyde, Scotland, if the Scottish independence referendum in September 2014 ends with Scots voting against continued membership in the UK.

Now a year-long study into the impact of independence by the parliamentary Defense Committee says such contingencies should be in place well before the referendum.

“The possibility of Scottish independence represents a serious threat to the future operational viability of the UK’s nuclear deterrent,” the study said.

“The UK Government must now give urgent consideration to contingency options in the event of a ‘Yes’ vote,” it added.

The call follows the confirmation by the Ministry of Defense, which is pushing ahead with a multi-billion-pound budget cuts plans, on Thursday that it has no contingency plan in place for the Trident nukes if Scots vote to break away from UK.

“No contingency plans are being made to move Trident out of Scotland,” a Ministry of Defense spokesman said.

Defense Secretary Philip Hammond has said relocation is ultimately possible but it would cost “a significant amount of money”.

This comes as there are concerns that the huge cost of removing Trident nuclear weapons system from Scotland amid massive defense spending cuts means Britain simply cannot relocate the nukes in short term and will have no options but to eliminate them or ask an independent Scotland to let London use Faslane naval base in exchange for a massive payback.
