UK PM: EU gained from US intel. co-op

Cameron’s comments come amid demands by France and Germany for new regulations on the intelligence gathering between the EU and the US after reports that the US National Security Agency (NSA) had eavesdropped on 35 world leaders including Germany’s Angela Merkel.

The British PM said during an EU summit in Brussels on Friday that intelligence gathered by the US and provided to Britain’s EU allies has been of assistance against terrorist plots and that reports of NSA wrongdoing should not lead to legislations to limit “properly funded intelligence services”.

Cameron, nevertheless, approved the summit statement in support of French and German plans to review the regulations, governing the intelligence cooperation with the US, by the end of the year.

However, he said that the leaks by NSA former contractor Edward Snowden have been hugely harmful and are “frankly signaling to people who mean to do us harm how to evade and avoid” detection.

He further suggested that to avoid tilting the balance between the governments and the terrorists, the EU and the US should have a “good framework … that works”, especially based on the “Five Eyes” intelligence understanding between the US and Britain with former British colonies Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

Cameron did not answer when asked whether London’s special intelligence cooperation with the US means he could have seen reports by the US spy agencies detailing Merkel’s private phone calls.
