British Prime Minister David Cameron is set to face questions in the UK’s House of Commons over his failed bid to prevent Luxemburg’s former premier Jean-Claude Juncker from becoming the new president of European Commission, the executive branch of the European Union (EU).
Cameron is expected to face criticism from the opposition Labour party over his failure to stop Juncker’s appointment to the EU’s top position during a session in the parliament due later on Monday.
The European Union voted 26 to 2 on Friday, electing Juncker to replace Jose Manuel Barroso despite strong opposition from Britain.
Writing in The Daily Telegraph ahead of his Commons appearance, the British prime minister expressed hope to work with Juncker in order to gain a “fair deal” for Britain in Europe.
“If by a fair deal we can agree that we are not heading, at different speeds, to the same place — as some have assumed up to now — then there is business we can do,” he wrote.
However, British Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls criticized Cameron’s handling of a battle against Juncker’s nomination, saying it was a “catastrophe” for the UK.
Earlier in June, the British premier threatened that the country would exit from the 28-nation bloc if Juncker became the president of the European Commission. Cameron claims the ex-Luxembourg official is too much in favor of closer political union and his nomination ignores the “pro-reform message” sent by voters in the European Parliament elections last month.
Meanwhile, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told the Financial Times on Monday that the prospect of the UK quitting the EU was “unimaginable,” adding Germany would do everything to keep Britain inside the bloc.
