The British government has piled up pressure on the Scottish people to scrap their independence plans.
According to reports, leading British politicians are set to warn that an independent Scotland cannot keep the pound as its currency.
British Conservative Chancellor George Osborne is expected to formally rule out the possibility of a currency union with the rest of the UK if Scots vote for independence in the upcoming referendum.
Liberal Democrat Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander and Labour Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls are also likely to reject a currency union with an independent Scotland.
However, John Swinney, Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Growth in the Scottish government, said the latest moves by Britain’s three main political parties are part of an attempt to bully the nation to withdraw its independence bid.
“This is nothing more than an attempt by the Westminster establishment to bully Scotland… It is a sign of panic that will backfire badly. No one will credibly believe these threats,” he said.
The news came less than a week after British Prime Minister warned that the Scottish independence will jeopardize UK’s stability and damage its international standing.
Scottish Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced in November last year that Scotland will have its independence day on 24 March 2016 if Scottish people vote to break away from the UK in a referendum on 18 September 2014.
The independence referendum could result in Scotland’s break-up from the United Kingdom after more than 300 years of political union.
