The British Queen’s income is to hit a record high this year amid tough government austerity measures for Britons.
According to accounts released on Thursday by the Crown Estate, the company that manages the Queen’s property portfolio, the UK monarch’s profits have reached a record 267 million pounds.
The published report says overseas interest of the Crown Estate’s London properties and investment in wind farms have brought about a 2-million-pound profit increase, taking the Queen’s annual income above 40 million pounds.
The UK monarch’s income, also known as the Sovereign Grant cost the British taxpayer 35.7 million pounds last year.
This sudden soar in the Queen’s profit has outraged monarchy critics.
Earlier in the month the British monarchy was forced to defend the controversial seven-figure cost of refurbishing a Kensington Palace apartment for Prince William and his family.
The high renovation cost sparked major controversy, with many critical of taxpayers’ money being spent on the royal residence.
On June 21, a royal spokesperson claimed that the couple paid for their own furnishings, including carpets and curtains.
The developments come as British Chancellor George Osborne has unveiled new austerity measures for the years to come, introducing an extra £11.5bn in spending cuts for the fiscal year of 2015-2016.
There are also reports that the British Queen had taken on a new 8-million-pound helicopter for the use of Prince William as well as his wife Kate Middleton, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
