‘Ukraine opens fire on civilian sites’

The Ukrainian army has opened fire on civilian sites in the eastern regions of the country despite a ceasefire announced by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Self-defense forces say.

Self-defense forces in Ukraine’s eastern city of Slavyansk told Interfax that the Ukrainian forces opened fire on the Lesnoy marketplace in the Artem neighborhood on Sunday morning despite Kiev’s ceasefire.

“The damage is extensive, several pavilions were destroyed and two men sustained injuries,” they added.

Slavyansk fighters also said a projectile hit a residential building on Olympiyskaya Street, leaving at least one person dead.

Meanwhile, a press service of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic told news agency Itar-Tass that Ukrainian troops shelled the village of Semyonovka near Slavyansk, leaving several civilians dead.

Referring to the possible number of casualties, the press service said, “In all, there could be three to five people.”

On June 20, Poroshenko announced a week-long ceasefire plan aimed at curbing the violence in the restive east. Poroshenko, however, extended the truce until 22:00 local time on Monday, June 30 after consultation with top Ukrainian defense officials.

Clashes between Ukrainian army and local self-defense forces, however, have continued in eastern regions, despite the declared ceasefire.

The head of the self-proclaimed Lugansk People’s Republic Valery Bolotov on Sunday accused the Ukrainian military of breaching the truce.

“On our part, we are observing the terms of the ceasefire while the opposite side is not fulfilling them,” he said.

Ukraine’s mainly Russian-speaking parts in the east have been the scene of deadly clashes between pro-Russia activists and the Ukrainian army since Kiev launched military operations in mid-April in a bid to crush the pro-Moscow protests.
