“The Syrian authorities have confirmed that I can visit Syria this week. I will arrive in Damascus on Wednesday March 7 and leave on Friday March 9,” Amos said in a statement.
“As requested by the Secretary-General (Ban Ki-moon), my aim is to urge all parties to allow unhindered access for humanitarian relief workers so that they can evacuate the wounded and deliver essential supplies,” the statement added.
During her two-day visit, the UN official is set to meet with Syrian foreign minister and the head of the nation’s Red Crescent. Amos will also visit several areas within the country, according to Syria’s state media.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March last year. Hundreds of people, including many security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.
While the West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of the killings, Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, stating that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
