“A large number of people in Afghanistan are killed by occupiers every day and the basic rights of the Afghans, as an independent nation, are violated,” said President Ahmadinejad in a meeting with the special representative of UN Secretary General to Afghanistan, Jan Kubis, in the Tajik capital, Dushanbe, on Monday.
“We are witnessing that the problems in Afghanistan such as terrorism and trafficking of narcotics have spilled over to other regional countries. This will block opportunities for progress of people in the region,” he added.
The Iranian chief executive, who is in Tajikistan to attend the third International Nowruz Celebrations, reiterated that the United Nations should shoulder the responsibility of restoring the rights of nations and said, “Every UN strategy for Afghanistan requires specified policies and measures.”
He also stressed the need for US-led forces to withdraw from the country, describing it as among the basic rights of people in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
“Today, Afghanistan is under severe pressure to sign a security deal with the US, but all of us know that the conclusion of an agreement under pressure has no legal legitimacy,” Ahmadinejad said.
The Iranian president further called for assistance to the Afghan government to implement reconstruction plans in the country.
“The UN has the duty to defend the rights of the Afghan people. If you seek to establish real peace in a country, you should defend the basic rights of its nation. If basic rights of the Afghans are observed, peace will be established in the country,” he pointed out.
The Iranian president warned that the persistence of the ongoing situation would be detrimental to Western powers, adding, “The continuation of the current trend will put an immediate end to the Westerners’ management of the world.”
He stated that people in Afghanistan and other regional nations have no confidence in international bodies and called on the UN to immediately restore public confidence in responsibilities and position of these organizations.
Iran is interested in the “fundamental” settlement of regional problems and the establishment of broad and sustainable security, which would be beneficial to all, Ahmadinejad pointed out.
The security situation remains fragile in Afghanistan despite the presence of tens of thousands of US-led foreign forces in the country.
The increasing number of troop casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the Afghan war.
