UN slams N Korea’s missile launches

The United Nations Security Council has condemned ballistic missile launches by North Korea, describing the firing of the missiles as a violation of the Council’s demands on Pyongyang.

“The members of the Security Council condemned these launches…and urged the DPRK (North Korea) to fully comply with the relevant Security Council resolutions,” Eugène-Richard Gasana, Rwanda’s UN Ambassador and the Council’s president for July, said on Thursday.

North Korea fired two short-range missiles into the Sea of Japan on Sunday. The range of the missiles was reported to be around 500 kilometers (310 miles).

Pyongyang also launched a live-fire drill by firing dozens of artillery shells into the sea near the disputed maritime border with South Korea on Monday.

North Korea said the tests and drills were aimed at showing its anger at planned South Korea-US naval exercises.

Washington and Seoul launched a joint five-day maritime maneuver in South Korean waters on Wednesday. The war game involves the USS George Washington carrier strike group. The 88,000-ton nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is loaded with about 70 aircraft.

South Korea claims that the navy drills are humanitarian in nature, while North Korea dubs them as a rehearsal for invasion.

The two countries remain technically at war because the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice, not a peace deal.
