The United Nations says Syria is experiencing the ‘biggest humanitarian crisis.’
UN Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos said on Wednesday, “This is the biggest humanitarian crisis we face today.”
She made the remarks during the second International Conference for Humanitarian Pledging for Syria in Kuwait.
“We know that we must do all we can to continue to scale up our activities this year if we are to keep pace with the growing needs [of Syrian people],” Amos stated.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who chaired the conference, also said that half of the population in Syria are in need of urgent humanitarian aid.
“Half of the total population of Syrian people, nearly 9.3 million individuals urgently need humanitarian aid,” Ban said.
Donors at the conference pledged more than 2.4 billion dollars in response to appeals by United Nations officials for helping people inside Syria and those who are in neighboring countries fleeing the conflict.
“These pledges prove that the people devastated by this conflict are not forgotten,” Ban said, adding, “It is also sending a strong signal to the neighboring countries – that we appreciate their generosity, and that they will not be left to shoulder the burden alone.”
The latest estimate indicates that some 4.1 million Syrians would be living as refugees in Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt by the end of 2014. Currently, an estimated 2.4 million refugees from Syria are residing in neighboring countries.
Syria has been gripped by crisis since March 2011. The United Nations says more than 100,000 people have been killed due to the violence.
