Uni students to protest funding cuts

UNIVERSITY students across the country will protest against the Gillard government’s plan to cut billions of dollars of funding from the tertiary sector.

The National Union of Students (NUS) said the “snap actions” would take place on Wednesday at many uni campuses in a national day of action against plans to cut $2.3 billion worth of funding from higher education.

Demonstrations would also take place later in the week, the union said.

NUS president Jade Tyrrell said students were “extremely aware of these proposed changes”.

“It is important for students to not only voice their outrage at the proposed changes, but awareness needs to be raised about the potential impact of these announcements on the quality of education and student debt levels,” Ms Tyrrell said in a statement.

She said most students thought “funding per student desperately needs to improve to respond to the increase in numbers”.
