Jobs will be lost and more children will fall through the cracks if the NSW government pushes ahead with plans to outsource foster-care services, a union says.
The Public Service Association (PSA) is lobbying the state government over moves to outsource foster care to non-government organisations (NGOs).
Speaking at the launch of the Safe Hands campaign in Sydney, PSA assistant secretary Steve Turner said NGOs did not have the capacity or the resources to handle the case load.
“Our fear is more children will fall through the cracks,” Mr Turner told AAP.
Mr Turner said the government was more focused on reducing costs than protecting children.
“We’re not convinced they’ve looked at the implications as much as… at the budget,” he said.
“They’re doing this as a cost-saving measure and not as the best issue for children.”
The PSA says the outsourcing will also result in Community Services (previously called DOCS) workers losing their jobs.
Mr Turner said 39 temporary Community Services workers from the NSW Central Coast region had been made redundant last week.
“The minister’s now saying they’re only doing it in that region … but members of ours in other regions – especially northern, western and southern – have contacted us saying, `I’m being terminated’,” he said.
The Safe Hands campaign will involve Community Services workers lobbying their local Liberal members.
“We will be asking you to come with us to visit those MPs and say, `if they do over your job, you’ll do over their job’,” Mr Turner told caseworkers at the launch.
Comment was being sought from the NSW Minister for Community Services.
