Many lawmakers from Democrat and Republican parties have expressed outrage over the team’s made-in-China uniforms.
US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Congressman Steve Israel called on the US Olympic Committee to produce uniforms for future Olympics that are made by American workers.
“We shouldn’t be going to the world stage with anything less. From head to toe, Team USA must be made in America.” Senator Gillibrand said.
Rep. Israel also criticized the move, saying “It is disgraceful that our American athletes will be wearing Chinese-made uniforms during the Olympics.”
“I urge the US Olympic Committee to reconsider their decision,” he added.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was also shocked after he heard the news, saying the Olympic committee should be ashamed.
“I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again,” Reid said.
However, the US Olympic Committee defended its decision over the outfits.
“Unlike most Olympic teams around the world, the US Olympic Team is privately funded and we’re grateful for the support of our sponsors,” spokesman Patrick Sandusky said.
US Olympians are set to walk in the Opening Ceremonies wearing a blue blazer and cream-colored pants for men and skirts for women. They will wear a blue beret with red and white stripes.
Meanwhile, US volleyballer Todd Rogers said there are bigger issues to worry about than where the clothes are made.
US media reported that Canadian and Australian athletes are also walk in the Opening Ceremonies with made-in-China uniforms.
