The drone went down near the Afghan border in the mountainous Machikhel area which is located about 30 kilometers (20 miles) east of Miranshah.
Although military officials in Peshawar say the drone crashed due to technical problems, the Taliban claim to have shot down the US drone.
The militants say they have collected the wreckage, and will soon release pictures of the drone.
It has been reported that gunshots and a blast were heard before the drone went down.
This comes as Pakistanis are holding a two-day sit-in in front of parliament in Islamabad, in protest against the US drone strikes.
The US regularly carries out attacks by unmanned aircraft on Pakistan’s tribal regions, claiming the airstrikes target militants affiliated to the Taliban and al-Qaeda terrorist groups.
This is while locals say civilians are the main victims of the strikes. Pakistanis say drone attacks violate their sovereignty.
