‘US funds NGOs to fuel chaos in Egypt’

On Tuesday, Egyptian state media cited International Cooperation Minister Faiza Aboul Naga as making the remarks at a court proceeding four months ago which investigated allegations that the NGOs used foreign funds to create chaos in Egypt amid the ouster of former dictator Hosni Mubarak in February 2011.

Aboul Naga has been in charge of dealing with the foreign groups’ activities in Egypt.

Last week, 43 employees of nonprofit groups, including at least 16 Americans, were referred to an Egyptian court of law for trial.

The US has threatened Egypt to cease its USD 1.5-billion annual aid to the country unless the case is settled.

Last week, the Egyptians marked the first anniversary of their revolution as tens of thousands of people took to the streets across the country to protest against the military rulers who took power following mass protests that toppled the US-backed Egyptian dictator.

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), which seized control after the ouster of Mubarak’s regime last February, has failed to meet a deadline it has announced to hand over power after a president is elected later this year.
