An American political commentator says the US government is playing a “dramatic show” over wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as its promises and actions are different.
In an interview with Press TV on Saturday, Michael Burns said President Barack Obama announced that American troops were out of the two countries, but the Pentagon is planning to send more troops to Iraq.
He made the comments when asked about a recent announcement by the Army chief of staff Gen. Ray Odierno.
On Friday, Odierno said it might be necessary to deploy more American forces to Iraq, warning that the fight against the ISIL terrorist group will intensify and could go on for years.
The general added that he would not rule out the need to send small numbers of US ground troops into combat as tactical airstrike spotters or as front-line advisers embedded with Iraq forces.
“In this case, you have the president of the United States coming out firmly saying no more boots on the ground, saying we’re out of Afghanistan, we’re leaving Iraq, running an enormous campaign trying to convince the American people that this is the direction our country is going,” Burns said.
The analyst described the new general’s announcement as “a little show.”
“Since the turn of the 20th century, the United States doesn’t go very long without being in a war footing, going back to the American-Spanish war, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, various attacks on small countries during the 70s and 80s and now we end up in two wars in Iraq, now we’re in Afghanistan,” he said.
