US Killer tornado brings heavy losses

The Wednesday night storm system was described as “a mile-wide tornado” by spotters, who added that it was moving “right at the city of Cleburne” in north Texas with a population of about 15,000, according to the US National Weather Service.

“If you are in its path… take cover immediately to protect your life,” the weather service further warned.

While the spokesperson for the state’s Hood County Sheriff’s office said there were “multiple fatalities” after the tornado hit the city of Granbury, accurate casualty figures remain sketchy, with some local news outlets reporting that three people have so far been confirmed dead.

Moreover, Hood County Commissioner Steve Berry also said “We are in a mass casualty situation.”

Some of the injuries as the result of the storms have reportedly been severe with the local press citing Hood County Sheriff Roger Deeds as saying there have been “bad injuries… with people losing limbs.”

There have also been reports of ‘flattened homes with people inside’ and a hail storm in the area, raining down hails as large as grapefruits.

Deeds further estimated that 75 homes in the Granbury area were “totally destroyed.”

While four tornados were reportedly spotted in northern Texas on Wednesday, the National Weather Service issued a statement, saying 32 counties in the state and four in the neighboring state of Oklahoma would remain under a tornado watch until 1 a.m. local time.
