US ‘master’ of double standards

The United States is “master” of double standards and full of “contradictions,” an Australian academic says.

The country “has been a master of double speak, it is a system that has used the slogan of liberty and freedom for two centuries, while perpetuating slavery and deeply institutional racism for most of that time,” said Tim Anderson, a senior lecturer at the University of Sydney.

Anderson was referring to an article in Antiwar.com about the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) James Clapper as a leading proponent of keeping the NSA telephone surveillance scheme a secret.

“The institutions of the US Empire, which has always claimed not to be an empire and claimed not to be involved in colonization,” have used spying agencies like the CIA and NSA with “cynical principles,” Anderson said.

The US is “consistently pursuing the double standard of being horrified at its petty secrets being revealed and wanting to spy on the whole world,” he added.

The NSA has faced severe criticism for violating privacy rights by monitoring the communications of Americans and foreigners through a sweeping eavesdropping program.

There is pressure on the Obama administration to grant clemency to whistleblower and former NSA contractor Edward Snowden who has released thousands of classified documents on NSA spying programs.
