The United States is using Ukraine as a scapegoat to destabilize Russia as tensions mount between Moscow and Washington following Crimea’s integration with Russia, an analyst tells Press TV.
Deena Stryker was talking to Press TV regarding the US’s offer to deliver gas to Europe after Russia threatened to cut off the export of the commodity to Ukraine which, in turn, supplies it to Europe.
“It’s all a bluff I think on the United States’ side and it’s all part of a grander scheme to destabilize Russia,” she said.
Stryker said the US government is “using Ukraine just as a few years ago they used Georgia” which experienced a US-backed so-called Rose Revolution in 2003.
She further added that similar “attempts to destabilize Russia” could be made “anywhere in [its] borders.”
Stryker said the European countries “are caught between a rock and a hard place” as US-Russia tensions keep rising.
“They (the Europeans) are very reluctant to go through with sanctions, with really meaningful sanctions, because they know that they’re the ones who are going to pay the price,” she said.
Tensions between Moscow and the West remain high after Crimea separated from Ukraine and requested to join Russia after a referendum on March 16, in which nearly 97 percent of the participants voted for rejoining Russia. Russia subsequently accepted Crimea’s request.
US President Barack Obama has signed executive orders imposing sanctions on senior Russian officials and a Russian bank.
Following pro-Russian demonstrations in the Ukrainian cities of Donetsk, Lugansk, and Kharkov over the weekend in which protesters seized government buildings, US Secretary of State John Kerry threatened Russia with more sanctions accusing Moscow of “an illegal and illegitimate effort to destabilize” Ukraine.
