President Bashar al-Assad has warned that the West and its regional allies will pay a high price for supporting terrorism in Syria.
Speaking in the inauguration ceremony of his third seven-year term in office as president on Wednesday, Assad said the war was waged against the Syrian people rather than the government in order to justify foreign military intervention in the country.
The Syrian leader added that the crimes committed by terrorists over the past three and a half years, showed the true colors of what foreign powers call a revolution.
Assad also noted that the conflict was a plot against the Middle East region, stressing that the violence fueled by the US and its regional allies will spill over and impact themselves.
Assad was re-elected last month in a landslide victory that saw him win nearly 90 percent of the vote.
Western opponents of the Syrian government have voiced concern as militants appear to be biting the hand that feeds them.
Hundreds of Western and Europeans had gone to Syria to fight against Damascus and fears are now growing that European militants, trained and hardened in Syria, may carry out terrorist attacks once they return home.
Syria has been experiencing deadly crisis since March 2011. Many people, including a large number of security personnel, have been killed in the violence.
The West and its regional allies including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey are giving financial and military support to the militants.
