VMware on Tuesday announced former SAP executive Sanjay Poonen will join the company as its new executive vice president and general manager of its End-User Computing business.
In the role, Poonen will be responsible for strategy, products, engineering, and delivery of all VMware desktop products and other end-user services.
The virtualization and cloud giant’s chief executive, Pat Gelsinger, called Poonen a “distinguished leader” whose expertise in the field will be “invaluable.”
“VMware is uniquely positioned to help customers thrive in the era of mobile, social and cloud computing,” Poonen said in prepared remarks. “VMware has made tremendous progress in helping customers connect end users to their data, applications, content and desktops with enterprise-class control and security. I am excited to join the VMware team at this critical time in the industry to help accelerate our momentum in end-user computing.”
Poonen announced on Twitter on July 19 that after seven years with SAP as its mobility chief he would leave the German enterprise software giant.
While VMware focuses all but entirely on the cloud and virtualization, the company’s End-User Computing unit develops a whole suite of products, including those under the VMware Horizon brand. Horizon, the company’s cloud-based management service for application and data provisioning, was announced in 2010 at the firm’s annual conference.
