VMware bought Zimbra in 2010 and touted it as a foundational part of its cloud stack strategy. Almost three years after closing the Zimbra purchase, VMware noted in a short statement that it sold the email and calendar company to Telligent for n undisclosed sum.
In a statement, VMware said the sales of Zimbra for an undisclosed sum “marks the completion of VMware’s divestitures associated with realignment actions announced previously on Jan. 28, 2013.”
The financial hit was immaterial.
Here’s a look at VMware’s original plan for Zimbra.
For VMware’s part, the sale of Zimbra makes sense. The deal wasn’t a home run when VMware acquired Zimbra from Yahoo in 2010. VMware said it is going to be focusing on the software defined data center, hybrid cloud and end-user computing.
The original idea was that VMware would couple Zimbra with its desktop virtualization tools and cross sell applications. VMware’s plan was to build out its desktop arsenal. Zimbra made more sense under VMware than Yahoo, but not by much. VMware did create a Zimbra appliance that was designed to be a personal cloud on a laptop.
