Like a living talisman strung around the neck or pinned to the lapel, the wearable planters made by Colleen Jordan allow their wearer to tote around a sweet bit of greenery. Whether a wee sprouting sprig, succulent, air plant, or plucked posy, there is something undeniably magical about being able to wear a plant so close to your heart throughout the day.
The original idea for the wearable planter came to the Atlanta-based artist from the desire to create something with an heirloom quality, but out of plastic. Her use of polymeric materials may be counterintuitive to the green set, but in her context, this antithesis of planned obsolescence makes sense. It’s a material that last for thousands of years, yet its applications are generally only temporary. She makes objects that are meant to endure.

You can bring a plant with you on your day’s adventure! Plants help clean the air you breathe, are beautiful, and create a wonderful conversation starter (it’s also believed that exposure to plants throughout the day can make you more intelligent — but I make no claims to this).

The designs are created using modeling software, then 3D-printed (which creates minimal waste) and finished by hand. The material is watertight, and acts as a perfect vase to carry your pet plant with you wherever you go.

For the ladies or the gents: The wearable planter above is a lapel pin (or brooch), instead of a necklace. It attaches to clothing with magnets so as not to damage the fabric.
Each garden gem is between $20-$45 and comes with directions on how to add plants and recommendations on which work best. (No plants are included with the pieces.) And note: Wearable planters are also available for your bicycle!
