‘Welsh A&E staff shortage dangerous’

A shortage of medical workers at Welsh accident and emergency (A&E) departments is at a “tipping point” and risking the safety of patients, an expert says.

Mark Pouldenm, the chair of College of Emergency Medicine made the remarks and called the situation in Wales a “vacancy staffing crisis.”

“Over the last year or 18 months we have seen a change. We’ve essentially reached a tipping point in our staffing levels. Some departments you cannot deliver what you want to for patients,” said Puldenm.

“Sometimes you can’t deliver the quality and certain times we can’t deliver the safety we require either which can be difficult,” he added.

His comments came as figures obtained by the British media under Freedom of Information Act showed 15 percent or almost one in seven medical positions at A&E departments in Wales were either vacant or filled by temporary staff.

According to the figures, the emergency staff shortage rate is higher than the average vacancy rate within the Wales National Health Service (NHS) of more than five percent.

The Welsh government commented on the staff storage, saying that there is not a general recruitment problem however “there are geographical hotspots and recruitment difficulties in some specialties.”

“If we want senior A&E doctors present for more hours of the week, we will only achieve this if we stop spreading them so thinly and focus their working in fewer centers,” it added.

Welsh Health Minister Mark Drakeford also commented on the figures saying, “Right across the United Kingdom there is a shortage of senior doctors to work in A&E departments and Wales is no exception.”

The minister continued by saying the NHS in Wales, including the A&E departments, needs to be reorganized in order to manage resources better.

“The problems of recruitment don’t go away by reorganization but they become more manageable because you are able to concentrate your forces,” said Drakeford.
