Press TV has conducted an interview with Allen Rolland, online columnist, to further discuss the issue.
The following is a rough transcription of the interview.
Press TV: Why do you think the West refuses to accept that armed gangs are also responsible for the violence in Syria as China and Russia put it?
Rolland: Think of Libya, the same thing is happening right now in Syria, exactly the same thing. We are meddling. Israel is meddling. We are, obviously in some ways, providing arms. That’s exactly the same thing. Libya is still in turmoil and Syria is heading for the same place.
The only difference is we’ve got the big boys, China and Russia, saying no way this is going to be happening.
It’s power politics again. It’s the West being a bully. It’s the Arab states are part of the West. And it’s literally heading towards a showdown where the BRIC nations against NATO and the Arab states.
But this is good. All of this stuff is coming to a head. Because why? The magic word here is this: regime change. The West is committed to it – we’re committed to it in Libya.
Can you actually imagine Hillary Clinton flying in there and saying exactly the same thing she said in Libya? “We came. We saw. He died.” It’s outrageous arrogant gesture by our Secretary of State.
We’re heading towards the same thing unless the big boys, meaning China and Russia, stop it in its tracks.
Press TV: Indeed. Also we have Russian foreign minister warning against foreign intervention in Syria saying that such a move could lead to a war with unforeseen consequences. How serious can the situation get there in Syria?
Rolland: Once again, think of Libya because it’s the same scenario. We’re asking the same questions we asked about Libya. Of course it can get serious. But it’s a different ball- now the big boys are playing here: China and Russia.
Of course, we can definitely have a civil war there but don’t think that we’re not meddling in it. Don’t think that we’re not – I’m talking about the West and Obama and Clinton – talking out of both sides of our mouth in this deal. We’re the hypocrites in here and we’re the ones saying that ‘we’re not the bad guys’. But we are the bad guys! I’m talking about the West here.
It’s still all about what? -Oil; natural resources. That’s what it is. It’s still the same game that’s done with Iraq, went to Libya and is now in Syria.
Press TV: It’s interesting that when it comes to talking about democracy, the US refuses to criticize Saudi Arabia for instance, but says there’s no democracy in Syria. What is Washington’s definition of democracy?
Rolland: Well, it’s a good question. Aren’t we doing exactly the same thing with China, scolding them about human rights when basically we are the biggest perpetrator, mistreating of people in the world.
We are the terrorist rogue state – I’m talking about the United States – and self-righteously stating that we are a democratic nation standing for human rights. It’s a laugh. It’s ridiculous!
But the game is being played particularly to an American audience. It’s an election year too. Yes, we’re talking out of both ends of our mouth. It’s very hypocritical.
But it’s a different ballpark in Syria because, actually, something big could happen there particularly with Russia and China.
