I recall the farmer who invited visitors to help him gather the sheep in. In the sheep’s pasture was a gap in the fence. The farmer’s sheep dog, would round up the sheep. The animals would then be persuaded to rush towards this hole in the fence.
The farmer stood at the gap with his shepherd’s crook held knee high. As the sheep bolted towards the exit each animal expertly leaped over the farmer’s stick. When about half the animals were through he removed the raised stick. Yet, each sheep, hot on the heels of the one in front, continued to leap over a barrier that was no longer there. Dumb creatures!
This caused much amusement to visitors. He then pointed out that sheep by nature are mountain creatures. When alarmed, sheep flee by leaping across each crevasse as it is encountered. As it springs, each closely following animal, unable to see the danger ahead, jumps too. In this way sheep and goats make it to safety. One can well imagine, dare I say this, the sheepish grins on the faces of the farmer’s visitors when they figure out how smart the sheep really are.
Merthyr Tydfil in Wales is famous for its mountain sheep. These animals were notorious for descending on the townsfolk’s flowerbeds. To deter the unwanted visitors’ cattle grids were installed. The sheep on encountering the grids simply rolled across them.
I was cynical when a Lancashire hill farmer explained that each of the sheep in the nearby field had names. To make his point he pulled to a stop and called out Lucy and then Betty. Two sheep separated from the herd and approached us.
Remember the outcry when Cecil the lion was killed? At the raising of orchestrated mainstream media’s baton people wail and lament. Every day, the peoples of Donbass (Ukraine) Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Libya and elsewhere, suffer far worse than did Paris on Friday 13. The weapons used each have stamped on them: ‘MADE IN THE DEMOCRACIES’. People don’t lift their heads from their dinner plates. Now you know why people are called sheeple.
