Wildfires have razed more than 30 homes in Australia’s southeastern state of Victoria, with the flames threatening the country’s second largest city, Melbourne.
Hundreds of firefighters and emergency workers have been deployed to the state to contain the blaze.
Victoria State Premier Dennis Napthine confirmed on Monday that more than 30 houses have been destroyed across the state so far.
“At this stage, we have no evidence of loss of life, which is a great effort by the firefighters and all emergency services, and at this stage, we have no evidence of serious injury,” Napthine said.
More than 70 fires are burning across Victoria and 15 emergency warnings are in effect, reports said.
Hot and dry winds and soaring temperatures have been fanning scores of major blazes across the state.
Firefighters also succeeded to save about 550 properties from an intense blaze at suburban Keilor near Melbourne Airport.
“It was very hard for us to initially get that fire to stop due to the fact that the winds were blowing up towards the airport,” said Rob Purcell from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade.
The fires have also spread into the neighboring state of New South Wales.
Hundreds of people spent the night in evacuation shelters after being forced to flee their homes.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott has said his administration is ready “to do all we reasonably can to ensure that people get the help they need in these difficult, difficult hours and days.”
The current wildfires are the second worst fires Australia has seen since 2009, when over 170 people lost their lives in flames.
