Hobart’s Lord Mayor is hailing the first mid-winter Dark MOFO arts festival as a transformational event for Hobart.
The 10-day long event wrapped up at the weekend and organisers say it was a huge success.
The event received some public funding, but was mostly bankrolled by MONA owner David Walsh.
Alderman Damon Thomas is comparing the event to the Commonwealth Games, often credited with transforming Brisbane’s identity during the 1980s.
“David Walsh, let’s not underestimate the man, it’s been fantastic for Hobart, but Hobart is not just David Walsh,” he said.
“Hobart is all the things that David Walsh is creating.
“Very similar to what happened in Brisbane after the Commonwealth Games, the city jumped onto, entrepreneurs jumped onto it, and the city – Brisbane – became the city it is today.”
