Maintenance workers employed by a Qantas contractor have started picketing the domestic terminal at Brisbane airport over a wages dispute.
Electrical Trades Union organiser Garry Rogers says BCS Infrastructure Support locked out 26 maintenance workers at Brisbane Airport at 6pm (AEST) on Sunday.
Mr Rogers told AAP the lockout, which only affects the domestic terminal, is the latest in a bitter feud that has included strike action.
He had been working with the contractor to resolve the dispute but had received no response by the 7am Monday deadline.
“We cannot get through to them in New Zealand, their phones are off,” Mr Rogers told AAP.
“So until we hear from them we have started picketing the airline.”
Mr Rogers said the contractor put a deal, which was accepted, to NSW members on Friday night but the same offer has not been put to Queensland’s maintenance workers.
“We have heard nothing,” he said.
A Qantas spokesman told AAP the dispute would not delay passengers.
“These are not Qantas employees and this is a matter entirely for BCS,” the spokesman told AAP.
“BCS are putting in place contingency plans and have advised us that this will not impact our operations.”
Mr Roger says the dispute stems from pay inequality, with Brisbane workers paid up to 25 per cent less than their Victorian counterparts.
