Yemen election ‘affront’ to people

In an interview with Press TV on Sunday, Sara Flounders, the co-director of the International Action Center, said the upcoming presidential election in Yemen is “a rubberstamp with no choice being given to the people.”

The Yemeni parliament has adopted a law that approves Vice President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi as the “consensus candidate” in the presidential election of February 21.

On January 29, Yemeni dictator Ali Abdullah Saleh arrived in the United States to receive “medical treatment” for injuries he sustained in an attack on the presidential palace in the capital, Sana’a, in June 2011.

Flounders added that the presidential election in Yemen is an “absolute affront” to the people, who have demanded “change and an end to this brutal dictatorship; to this whole regime.”

“Instead, Saleh comes to the United States as an honored guest staying at an elite five-star hotel for medical treatment and his handpicked Vice President Hadi is handed the presidency.”

On January 21, the Yemeni parliament approved a law that granted complete immunity from prosecution to Saleh for the crimes committed during his 33-year-long rule. However, Yemeni anti-regime protesters strongly reject the immunity law.

The legislation was part of a power transfer deal brokered by the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council. Saleh signed the deal on November 23, 2011, and agreed to transfer his powers to the vice president and step down within 90 days.

The political observer said the Arab states of the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council are the “corrupt monarchies of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates and so on.”

“They have imposed a solution. The United States of course supports it.”

“There is no transformation whatsoever… Those (in Yemen) who would have been really for any kind of democratic change, instead find themselves outraged at US conduct, which, they can now see clearly, is tied hand and foot to the dictatorships of the whole region,” Flounders concluded.
