Zardari files petition for more security

“My life is in danger from the Taliban militants and they could try to assassinate me,” Zardari said in his petition submitted in Sindh High Court in the port city of Karachi on Thursday.

In his request, the central leader of the opposition Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), has asked additional paramilitary troops and policemen to keep him safe against Taliban militants.

The militants of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have conducted numerous deadly attacks against the security forces and the civilians. The militants have been able to spread their influence in different parts of the country, despite Pakistani army’s frequent assaults on them.

Zardari stepped down at the end of his five-year term last month, becoming the first democratically elected president in the country’s history to complete a full term in office.

He rose to power after the assassination of his wife, two-time Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, in December 2007. He’s credited with taking a strong stance on militancy and democratic transfer of power in a country whose 66-year history has been plagued by military coups.

Zardari’s popularity, however, was hurt by economic mismanagement and a failure to meet Pakistan’s energy needs.

Mamnoon Hussain , a businessman from Karachi and a close ally of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, was sworn in as Pakistan’s new president after defeating Zardari in May’s general elections.
