Zuckerberg says US ‘blew it’ on spying

“I think the government really blew it on this one. And I honestly think that they’re continuing to blow it in some ways and I hope that they become more transparent in that part of it,” Zuckerberg told ABC’s “This Week.”

Facebook assisted the National Security Agency (NSA) with conducting espionage activities on American citizens and foreign nationals including certain European leaders.

The company provided the NSA with user-information such as their photos, videos, audio files and so forth.

Zuckerberg said, “I certainly think that we all want national security. We want to live in a safe country and we want to be protected from risks.”

But, he added, “I think that these things are always a balance. In terms of doing the right things and also being clear and telling people about what you’re doing.”

According to secret documents disclosed by former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, the NSA and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are eavesdropping on millions of American and European phone records and the Internet data from major Internet companies such as Facebook, Yahoo, Google, Apple, and Microsoft.

The NSA carried out espionage activities on even US allies and their leaders, which included bugging German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s mobile phone for a decade.

The revelations prompted Brazil and Germany to draft a UN General Assembly resolution aimed at restraining the NSA’s surveillance programs against other nations.

The American Civil Liberties Union has called for an end to government spying activities due to the violation of constitutional rights.
