Wounded near the bus bombing |
(Scroll down for video) A public bus belonging to the Dan bus company, blew up in Tel Aviv, Israel, after a terrorist planted a bomb on board injuring at least 21, according to police officials.
A terrorist planted the bomb on the bus that was traveling on Shaul Hamelech Street in central Tel Aviv around noon. Five people were seriously injured and two are in critical condition, while three people are in moderate overall condition. No one died.
Twenty-one people have been evacuated to Icholov Hospital, most of them with minor injuries. Others are being treated for emotional shock.
Eyewitnesses said that the terrorist who boarded the bus, placed a suspicious package there and then fled. Police arrested a suspect, but later released him when it became clear that he had no connection with the attack.
Authorities said there was no advance warning of a terrorist attack. No terrorist group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but Islamic Jihad and Hamas have threatened to strike anywhere in Israel.
Television footage showed the bus with the windows removed and the metal frame twisted by the force of the explosion, in images that recall scenes from previous terrorist attacks during the Second Intifada, also known as the Oslo War.
The front window was completely broken and glass scattered on the floor, as the wounded were loaded into ambulances by an army of doctors.
The blast took place as U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in Israel for talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on how to end a deadly spike in bloodshed in and around Gaza during the past week.
Netanyahu’s spokesman said it was a terrorist attack.
The Arabs of Gaza celebrated the attack. Hamas officials said they carried out the attack in revenge for the Israeli air strikes in Gaza that killed several members of the same family.
