U.S. warship in Israel

The U.S. is sending several warships to help evacuate U.S. citizens, in case commercial flights become grounded, according to news media reports.

Three U.S. Navy warships are returning to the eastern Mediterranean to remain on alert in case they are needed to help U.S. citizens who want to leave Israel in the coming days, according to two U.S. officials.

Officials stressed the evacuation is still a long shot and the Obama administration is planning ahead. U.S. citizens who wish to leave the region now are able to do so through commercial airlines.

But the decision to send the ships, even if the event is a remote contingency highlight the growing concern about the conflict between Israel and Gaza.

“This is due diligence. It is best to be prepared should there be a need,” an official said Monday. Both officials said the ships were used only to help U.S. citizens and not for any combat role.

The most immediate impact will be on the crews of ships and about 2,500 Marines aboard. They had been scheduled to return to Norfolk, Virginia, just after Thanksgiving, returning home now may take

several days depending on the outcome of events, officials said.

The vessels involved are the USS Iwo Jima, USS New York and USS Gunston Hall. At the end of last week the ships were west of Gibraltar, before the decision was made to turn around and send them back to the eastern Mediterranean, where they will remain for now.

The U.S. military also maintains three to four ships off the coast of Israel, that are capable of shooting down ballistic missiles. That deployment has stretched for a few months in the face of a potential threat from Iran.
