Burned man being rushed to the hospital in Ashdod

A man was burned to death after a cigarette fell out of his hand and onto the couch he fell asleep on, according to a police investigation in Israel.

The man who was rushed to Tel Hashomer hospital in Tel Aviv, and died of his burns was identified as a 50-year-old resident in the Israeli city of Ashdod. He was critically injured earlier after his apartment caught fire.

Fire officials responded to the scene yesterday afternoon and attempted to rescue the man, who was badly burned. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. A police investigation revealed that a smoldering cigarette caused the disaster.

Magen David Adom spokesperson, Zaki Heller, said that the victim suffered burns to 100 percent of his body. “In the Lachish region, at 12:10 pm we received a call about a fire in an apartment on the third floor in a building with 12 floors on Walnut Street in Ashdod. After a quick search no other

people with injuries were found,” he said.

An emergency worker said: “When we arrived at the scene we treated a boy discovered in the burning building. He was slightly injured by smoke inhalation.”

The commander of the Fire Service in Ashdod, said that the findings of the initial investigation revealed that “This is a man who was smoking on a couch on the porch and apparently fell asleep. The cigarette dropped and the man with restricted movements could not escape and was trapped there.”
