The ministry of civil affairs said in a statement that the typhoon has caused severe flooding and landslides across several regions of southeastern China.
China’s National Meteorological Center said the storm made landfall with heavy rains and winds of nearly 120 kilometers per hour. Typhoon Soulik first lashed the coastal Fujian Province on Sunday after battering Taiwan a day earlier. At least two people were killed in Taiwan. This is the seventh typhoon to hit China’s mainland this year.
Emergency services say over 500,000 people have been forced out of their homes.
Flights and train services have been cancelled in the affected regions.
Thousands of people are bracing for more torrential downpours amid warnings of floods and landslides. Thousands of army soldiers have been deployed for possible relief operations.
Torrential rains and heavy downpours have battered the southwestern province of Sichuan since July 7 and have led to 68 deaths, with another 179 people missing.
More than three million people in 16 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities have been affected by severe weather conditions.
Mudslides and flooding are common in China’s mountainous areas, killing hundreds of people every year.
