A 21-year-old Melbourne woman accused of killing a 10-month-old baby is suffering from drug withdrawal and possible mental health issues, a court has heard.
Michelle Nguyen, of Sunshine North, is charged with manslaughter over the baby’s death in the northern Melbourne suburb of Glenroy on November 5 last year.
Homicide Squad detectives charged Nguyen on Monday following an investigation into the baby girl’s death, and she faced the Melbourne Magistrates Court for a filing hearing later in the day.
Defence lawyer Marlene Dixon told Magistrate Andrew Capell her client was suffering from drug withdrawal and suspected mental health issues, and had asked to see a nurse as soon as possible.
Mr Capell ordered Nguyen to be remanded in custody and receive a Court Integrated Services Program assessment ahead of a bail application hearing on Thursday.
Nguyen, dressed in a woollen jumper, sat with her head bowed and showed no emotion throughout her brief appearance in the court.
