Alleged Mossad spies arrested in Tunisia

Tunisian weekly newspaper Al-Moussawar reported on Monday that one of the suspects was caught while he was allegedly transmitting information through the Internet on the security situation in the Chaambi Mountain area of the Kasserine governorate in western Tunisia.

The second man was arrested on suspicion of transmitting sensitive information via a social networking website and abetting the first suspect, according to the report.

The report further indicated that the two men, who come from the North African country’s northern town of Bizerte, are currently being interrogated by the police. However, the arrest has not yet been confirmed by the Tunisian Interior Ministry.

Abderraouf Ayedi, a Tunisian lawmaker and lawyer, told Press TV that, “The Mossad has recruited poor and unemployed youth. They were arrested while providing information via the Internet about the recent terrorist attacks in the region of Kasserine.”

“The spread of violence and insecurity is partly due to Israel’s secret interference in Tunisia’s domestic affairs,” he added.

Nasreddine Ben Hadid, a Tunisian journalist and political analyst, also said the Israeli spy agency took advantage of the political instability in Tunisia to recruit local spies.

“The security vacuum of the post-revolutionary era has lasted more than expected. It’s a favorable environment for Mossad spies to cause discord among Tunisians,” he added.

Tunisian police and intelligence services are also on high alert following the report.

Tunisia’s ousted dictator, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, fled Tunisia in the aftermath of the country’s revolution in early 2011 and currently lives in exile in Saudi Arabia with his wife.
