Anti-US rallies persist in Pakistan

Thousands of people as well as political and right activists held protest rallies in cities of Lahore, Bahawlpur, Peshwar, Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Monday to condemn the burning of the holy Qur’an by US troops.

Around 800 women took to the streets and chanted anti-US slogans in eastern city of Bahawalpur.

In Lahore, workers of a local NGO also staged a demonstration and demanded trial of those behind the insulting act.

Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami party also held separate rallies in Peshawar, Rawalpindi and capital Islamabad to denounce US interference in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq.

On February 21, US troops torched copies of Islam’s holy book which they had taken from Afghan prisoners at the US military base and prison camp Bagram Airbase.

The act of desecration ignited days of anti-US protests in which some 40 people died in Afghanistan, spoiling relations between US-led forces and their Afghan partners to an all time low and forcing US President Barack Obama to publicly apologize for the sacrilege conduct of American troops.

Afghans, however, rejected the apology and demanded an immediate withdrawal of all foreign troops from their country.

The incident has also sparked angry protests against US and NATO forces in other Muslim countries, such as Bangladesh, Iran, Pakistan and Malaysia.
