Armenian pres. secures reelection

The Heritage Party’s leader Raffi Hovannisian, also trailed Sargsyan in second place with 32 percent of the votes, according to an exit poll by the Gallup Organization, reported by Armenian television on Monday.

The exit poll was conducted among a representative sample of 19,130 people at 122 polling stations across the country.

Reports say that full preliminary results will be announced on Tuesday.

This comes after more than 2.5 million eligible voters were expected to cast their ballots at 1,988 polling stations across the South Caucasian country in the presence of respectively 632 and 6,251 international and local election observers.

After casting his vote at a polling station in the capital, Yerevan, Sargsyan issued a statement saying that “I voted for the future of Armenia, for the security of Armenia, for the security of our citizens.”

The incumbent president is contesting six others in the election.

Critics said earlier Sargsyan would not face any real competition, because all the credible opponents had withdrawn.

The voter turnout stood at 69 percent in the previous presidential election in 2008.
