The Federal Government says it has been unable to contact one of the Australian men who sustained serious stab wounds in a bar fight in Bali.
Two Australian men were allegedly stabbed on Friday morning (Bali time) during an altercation at the Bounty Discotheque on Jalan Legian, the main street in a popular nightclub area near Kuta Beach.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says officials from the Australian Consulate-General in Bali are monitoring the case and are talking with local officials about the incident.
“Consular officers have been in contact with one of the men and have offered consular assistance,” the spokeswoman said.
But the department says it has not been been able to make contact with the second man, and had not received a request for assistance.
“We will continue to follow-up to offer him consular assistance as appropriate,” she said.
The fight is believed to have broken out after the alleged attacker spilled a drink that belonged to one of the victims, Bali police spokesman Hariadi said.
“He was asked to replace the drink, but then he got angry and there was a fight between the perpetrator and the victims,” he said.
The spokesman added that one man was stabbed in the stomach while the other one was cut on his chest and armpit.
One of the men has been identified as Jake Benjamin Whitehead.
Mr Hariadi said he could not provide a last name for the second victim, identifying him only as Chris.
Another police officer, who refused to be named, said the two Australian men were still in hospital and described their wounds as serious, although not life-threatening.
Mr Whitehead was being treated at the Bali International Medical Centre in Kuta while the man identified as Chris had been taken to Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar.
DFAT says it can not comment on the men’s condition or provide details of their identity.
Mr Hariadi said the attacker was not yet known but that he was believed to be a foreigner.
Two local people whose identities were not known were also injured in the fight.
